Glaucus, or the Wonders of the Shore
Cambridge, Macmillan & Co., 1859 (fourth edition, corrected and enlarged)/ 1855.
Octavo, [x], 230 pages plus 12 full-page chromolithographs.
Contemporary half leather and marbled boards, spine gilt-decorated in compartments, all edges marbled; leather a little rubbed at the extremities; minimal loss to the marbled paper on the edges of the boards; light foxing to the first and last few leaves; trifling signs of use and age; a very good copy.
Glaucus is a genus of small brightly coloured sea slugs; if nothing else, they make for attractive chromolithographs. Provenance: 'Francis Hayter, HMS "Liffey" Nov 1867' is written on an early binder's blank. Francis Hayter (1843-1891) was a Commander in the Royal Navy who settled in New Zealand (Geni website). 'HMS "Liffey" (1856) was a 24-gun Liffey-class screw frigate of 3915 tons, launched in 1856. She became a store hulk in 1877, and was sold in 1903' (Wikipedia).
