A signature of William IV snipped from the head of a document
An irregular-shaped piece of vellum (ranging from 40 to 105 mm high × 120 mm wide), the top left-hand corner of a printed vellum document with an attached embossed paper-over-wax seal; undated but 1830-37.
Slight discolouration along the top edge; the signature is in excellent condition.
In 1811, William 'parted from his mistress, the actor Mrs Dorothea Jordan (1762-1816) who had borne him 10 children. In 1818 he married Adelaide [1792-1849], daughter of the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen' ('Dictionary of World Biography'); the capital city of South Australia is named after her.
