Inscribed on the verso of the front flyleaf to 'Nurse Pratt with the Author's Compts'. One of the 'Library of Australian Authors' series (printed across the head of the front cover). A story of convicts and the 'Black War' in Van Diemen's Land in the 1850s. Charles Stuart Ross (1840-1927), a Presbyterian minister active in New Zealand, Tasmania and Victoria, was also an historian and prolific author, mainly of books on education and church history. This novel contains much material on the distressing history of the indigenous peoples of Tasmania (in particular, see pages 114-136).
