'Victory & Peace. The Prince of Wales. Some Interesting Details'. A souvenir poster celebrating the official tour by the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) to thank Australia for its contribution to the First World War

'Kureelpa', via Nambour, Queensland, 'Designed and Copyrighted throughout the United Kingdom and Australia by Wm. Smith', 1920.

A colour-pictorial poster, mounted and behind glass in a contemporary moulded wooden frame (visible image size 350 × 247 mm).

Frame a little spotted; unobtrusive tidemark to the centre-right portion of the poster (just visible in the illustration of HMS 'Renown'); overall, in very good condition.

This deluxe souvenir consists of ten vignette illustrations (two from photographs) in decorative cartouches (a design of red, white and blue ribbons, and sprays of wattle). They show Allied artillery, aeroplanes, submarines, tanks and medical personnel, as well as the coat of arms of Australia, a portrait of the Prince, an image of HMS 'Renown' (the repurposed battlecruiser on which he travelled) and two Australian infantrymen. At the foot is a caption: 'The above pictures will show our rising generations and generations to follow the implements our Soldiers fought with to gain us Victory and Peace in the Greatest World's War ...'.

The Prince reached Queensland (the last leg of his tour in Australia) on 26 July 1920. This souvenir poster was presumably available at the time, but we can find no mention (or trace) of it in the records. It appears Smith's fame may not have spread beyond Kureelpa (population 50 in 1911, rising to 72 in 1952).
