Pepa Aragulinja. Aranda Katjirberaka. Nana Intalelamala C. Strehlow, Galtjindadnindanala

Tanunda, Auricht's Printing Office (for the Board of the Finke River Mission of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Australia), 1928.

Octavo, 29 pages.

Flush-cut plain red cloth mounted on card; cloth lightly marked (mainly minimal discolouration to a small patch near the front bottom corner, where a sticker with a name written on it has been successfully removed); essentially a fine copy (probably uncirculated).

'Aranda school primer edited and with fifteen hymns translated by H.A. Heinrich' (Libraries Australia, on Trove); however, pages 14-22 appear to be mainly (New Testament) Bible stories. There seems to be some confusion around this small posthumous publication, reaching as far as the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. Its entry on Pastor Carl Strehlow (1871-1922) states that in '1904 he printed an Aranda school primer with translations of hymns by his assistant H.A. Heinrich; in 1919 he completed translating extracts from the Old Testament into Aranda which was published in 1928'. Trove describes the 263-page 1904 publication thus: 'Written in Arrernte; includes Bible stories, Scriptural quotations, hymns, prayers and the order of the Divine service in connection with the Lutheran Mission for use by the Aboriginal congregations of the Finke (from a short article from "The Register", May 21/04)'. In any event, this 1928 publication is a very rare item in our experience.
