The original preliminary artwork for a lavish promotional publication for the Parisian fashion boutique High-Life Tailor
Paris, printed by Draeger for High-Life Tailor, [1909].
Quarto, [17] leaves (each with one side blank); 13 leaves contain printed text illustrated with large original drawings by Vincent in pencil and orange and black ink; 3 leaves have black and white photographs of preliminary studies of colour paintings by René Lelong that appear in the published work; the last leaf is blank, apart from 'Dernier feuille' written in pencil. The last page in the published work contains half a page of text and one illustration not present in this proof.
Three-quarter cloth and marbled papered boards, with a leather title-label on the spine; very light wear to the spine; essentially a fine copy.
The story is a tale purportedly from the 'Thousand and One Nights' entitled 'Histoire du Tailleur de Bagdad et du Secret Merveilleux'. The preliminary drawings prefigure the published version, but vary in many ways from the final product. A copy of the published booklet is offered with this proof copy: quarto, [24] pages, comprising the colour-pictorial cover, 2 pages of preliminary text about High-Life Tailors (with 2 large samples of fabric tipped in on the second page), 5 full-page fashion plates for High-Life Tailor's Spring 1910 collection, and the illustrated story (12 pages plus 4 full-page colour plates); minimal foxing, otherwise a fine copy. René Vincent (1879-1936) would later gain international recognition for his dynamic Art Deco poster designs, especially for Bugatti, Peugeot, Michelin and Shell. This item, from the archives of the printers, Draeger frères, with their bookplate, is a remarkable insight into Belle-Époque book design.
