56 Squadron was formed at Gosport on 8 June 1916 and was posted to France in April 1917. It was the first unit equipped with the S.E.5. Over 25 pilots qualifed as 'ace' with 56, including the famous James McCudden VC (1895-1918; 51 kills). ('The Aerodrome' website).
