Original vellum ruled and lettered in black; top edge gilt, other edges uncut; covers lightly soiled and rubbed; minor surface loss to the front free endpaper from the removal of an old bookplate; minor signs of age and use; overall a very good copy.

The preferred second edition of this foundational work of Australian bibliography, with much additional material. Compiled by prominent London shipping merchant Stephen William Silver (1819-1905), the York Gate Library contained some 5000 publications relating to voyages, travels and geography, with a particular focus on the exploration and settlement of the British colonies. The collection was purchased by the South Australian branch of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia after Silver's death in 1905. With the bookplate of Sir William Crossman KCMG (1830-1901), an officer in the Royal Engineers and Magistrate for the colony of Western Australia in the 1850s, based mainly at Albany.
