The front flyleaf is inscribed and signed 'To our friends Mr and Mrs Bert Ellis with best wishes from Rose Sheard and Harold Sheard, "Lauriston", Port Elliot, May 1964' (from the parents of the author). Lauri Sheard accompanied Charles Mountford as his assistant on an Adelaide University Field Expedition to Ernabella, the Musgraves, Mann Ranges, Ayers Rock and Mt Olga in June-October 1940. He was eighteen at the time; he died in an air crash on active service over New Guinea in 1942.
