Item #112586 HMT 'Ivernia', Friday, June 9, 1916. Dinner [a menu card]. HMT 'Ivernia'.

HMT 'Ivernia', Friday, June 9, 1916. Dinner [a menu card]

A thin card (115 × 137 mm), printed recto only.

Card a little marked, with two horizontal creases (possibly lacking a portion across the top); nonetheless, in good condition.

On this day, HMT 'Ivernia', formerly SS 'Ivernia' (a British ocean liner owned by the Cunard Line until August 1914 when she was hired by HM Government), was en route from Alexandria to Marseille. Less than seven months later, travelling from Marseille to Alexandria on New Years Day 1917 with 2,400 British troops on board, she was torpedoed off Cape Matapan, Greece, by German submarine UB-47. Thirty-six crew members and eighty-five troops were killed.
