Where Murrumbidgee Flows. A Story of the Irrigation Area. [Duplicate typescript of an unpublished novel]

[Sydney, the Author], 'Copyright 1946'.

Quarto, [ii], 214 leaves (rectos only).

Overlapping plain card covers bound with large split-pin fasteners; typed title on the front cover; a few tears, creases and marks to the covers; a few signs of age and handling; in very good condition overall.

The duplicate typescript of an unpublished novel, with manuscript addenda by the author on approximately 50 pages and typographical corrections on others. The novel, a roman à clef, turns around the efforts of irrigation engineer Gerald McManus (explicitly identified in the foreword as Hugh Giffen McKinney, 1846-1930) to bring the bounties of irrigation to the plains by the Murrumbidgee River. McManus finds love and contends with sceptical locals, all the while extolling the virtues of hydraulic engineering. The final chapter is entitled 'Old Man Plain Turns Green'. The Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area is still one of the most productive agricultural areas in Australia.
