An album of photographs of a skiing holiday at the Cresta Palace Hotel, Celerina (near St Moritz), Switzerland, in the winter of 1912-1913

Oblong octavo, cloth; six thick card leaves designed to have a postcard-format photograph slipped in either side; in excellent condition.

The first seven photographs (captioned on the album leaves), and another 22 loosely inserted in an envelope mounted on the rear pastedown (15 postcard-format, 6 small snapshots, all captioned on the verso), show members of the Reid family of Glasgow and various friends enjoying themselves in the snow and on the ice: skiing, curling, tobogganing, waltzing on the rink, riding in a sleigh or skijoring (where a person on skis is pulled by a horse). Most of these personal images are credited to Mr A. Reid. The album carries a gift inscription 'To Fred from Elsie. London June 1913'. The five other photographs in the album proper were taken elsewhere on the extended European holiday. Two other similar albums relating to the holiday activities of same family are offered with it; they are also from Elsie (this time to Elizabeth). One is from 'Gourock Scotland Oct 22nd 1917'; images featuring military officers and sailors predominate. The other is dated 1921, and scenes reminiscent of travels in Africa are the norm.
