London, HMSO, 1887.
Large quarto, viii, lxvi, 336 pages plus 73 superb lithographs (most of them of fish, many of them double-page, a few of them tinted).
Original dark green cloth a little rubbed, scuffed and marked; an excellent copy, uncut and entirely unopened.
Offered together with four other volumes of reports from this most important research expedition, namely 'Summary of Scientific Results' (Parts 1 and 2, 1895), and 'Zoology', Volumes 28 and 32 (1888 and 1889). These four volumes are also large quarto, uncut and unopened in the original dark green cloth; there is minimal rubbing and bumping, the heads of the spines of three volumes are slightly snagged, and the occasional inner hinge is cracked but firm; overall, an excellent collection, containing numerous charts and plates. These particular volumes have the unique distinction of having been at one time the 'Property of the British / Australian and New Zealand / Antarctic Research Expedition / of 1929-30' (Mawson's second expedition), with a four-line rubber stamp to that effect on the half-title and title page of each volume. The later (much smaller) ownership stamp of a university zoology department is at the head of these pages, as well as across the BANZARE stamp in most instances. Items with any expeditionary provenance are increasingly rare on the open market. [5 items].
