Boston & Albany R.R. Dining Car Service between Boston and Utica on the Boston and Chicago Special ...

[Boston], Boston and Albany Railroad, 1894 ('6-5-'94').

A menu card (142 × 246 mm), with decorative serrated edges, designed to be folded down the centre to form a 4-page menu, comprising the title as above, the bill of fare, the extensive wine list, and the timetable for the daily rail service; this example is unfolded.

The centrespread is lightly marked, with a short closed internal tear and trifling surface loss near the bottom right-hand corner; the verso is glue-discoloured (the item appears to have been removed from a mount or similar at some stage); overall in good condition (with the more interesting menu side in very good condition).

Dinner was one dollar, and one could dine handsomely on Mackerel, Ribs of Beef or Spring Lamb, Fried Soft Shell Crabs, and all the trimmings. However, this pales beside the choices available on the wine list, commencing with seven varieties of Champagne ... The company clearly desired to keep its customers happy, as they were advised that 'Patrons will confer a favor by reporting any cause for dissatisfaction to A.S. Hanson, General Passenger Agent, Boston, Mass.'.
