The Russian Fur Seal Islands. [Contained in] 'Bulletin of the United States Fish Commission', Volume XVI [16], for 1896

Washington, Government Printing Office, 1897.

Quarto, pages 1-148 plus a page of charts, 52 pages of plates and 13 folding maps (9 coloured).

Original blind-ruled black cloth a little marked, rubbed and flecked, with trifling loss in spots; lettering on the spine difficult to discern; endpapers and edges a little foxed; a very good copy.

'The following treatise is based upon observations gathered during two different visits to the Commander Islands, off the coast of Kamchatka, the first undertaken in 1882-83, during the palmiest days of the fur-seal industry, the latter being last year (1895) ... to study the recent decline and to compare the conditions as I knew them thirteen years ago with those of the present trip' (introduction). For a detailed account of the interesting life of Dr Leonhard Hess Stejneger (1851-1943), read the lengthy contribution by Alexander Wetmore in the 'National Academy of Sciences of the United States Biographical Memoirs', Volume XXIV (online). This edition of the Bulletin runs to 428 pages, and contains another four well-illustrated articles: 'Deep Sea Exploration' by Tanner (168 pages); 'Salmon Investigations in the Head Waters of the Columbia River' by Evermann (54 pages); 'Artificial Propagation of Salmon on the Pacific Coast' by Stone (33 pages); and 'Artificial Propagation of the Rainbow Trout' by Seagle (20 pages).
