Octavo, xiv (last blank), 226, [18] (publisher's catalogue, including a title leaf) pages plus 47 pages of plates (from photographs) and 3 maps (one tinted, all with routes marked in red).
Colour pictorial red cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and blocked in black, blue and grey on the front board; slight loss of colour to a small section of the bottom edge of the front and rear cover; spine lightly sunned, with slight uneven loss of colour near the title; contemporary newspaper clippings tipped in on early blank pages, the half-title and the recto of the frontispiece, resulting in some discolouration of adjacent pages; Union-Castle Mail Steamship ephemera mounted on the rear endpaper (see below); a very good copy.
Provenance: Arnold Edwin Davey (1862-1920), South Australian flour-miller and grain merchant, with his signature (20 March 1909) on the flyleaf and a few pencilled emphases in his hand. The clippings relate to the book and to Southern Africa more generally; the shipping ephemera are a 56-page pamphlet by Ian D. Colvin entitled 'South and East Africa' and a 1912 processed letter that came with it.
