When Romance is Ended. The Diary of a Middle-aged Woman

Firenze [Florence], Francesco Pineider, 1930.

Octavo, 144 pages.

Block-printed paper (a design of fleurs-de-lis and lions rampant in red) over cloth, with a leather title-label on the spine (as issued); paper a little sunned and chipped about the spine, revealing the blue cloth beneath in places; paper a little nibbled with trifling (chiefly surface) loss; front endpapers a little offset; one leaf slightly creased, with a short marginal tear neatly sealed; a very good copy.

'A sea journey by steamer from England to Albany, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and many points on a radius from these cities' (according to a bookseller's catalogue entry, quoted on Trove). In fact, the voyage is not the focus of the book; it is primarily an account of a return visit to Australia by an ex-pat after the breakup of her marriage. Albany is reached by page 20; she commences her return journey, via New Zealand, Canada and America, on page 99. The author is identified by an early ink inscription, 'Auntie Kate Ramsden', on the title page. Loosely inserted is a 1974 newspaper clipping relating to the divorce of the English television personality Katie Boyle, with a pencilled note identifying her as the daughter of the author (in fact she is her granddaughter).
