Geoff Tyson was a prisoner-of-war of the Japanese from 23 February 1942, when the survivors of Sparrow Force were made captive in Timor. He 'had quite a varied experience in Timor, Java, Singapore and Japan. He was one of the few survivors from a ship on which there were about one hundred and fifty prisoners-of-war from Sparrow Force and which was sunk off Nagasaki in June, 1944. Most of his original sketches were lost and many of the sketches in this book are reproduced from memory' (from the foreword).
