Inscribed, dated (14 June 1939) and signed by John Russell Black (1908-1988), patrol officer and explorer (Australian Dictionary of Biography) to anthropologist Graeme Pretty (with his pencilled emendation of the presentation date to 1969). 'First White Man to go to Rabaul, in New Britain, and Stay There' (blurb).
