[Portrait of an Auctioneer]

A vintage photograph of an auction of hides and skins in progress

A gelatin silver photograph (image size 108 × 152 mm, on the original mount 203 × 253 mm), stamped on the verso 'With the Compliments of George Laughton - Live Stock Auctioneer, Wool, Hide, Skin & Tallow Salesman'.

Several generations of Laughtons were involved in the family business, and the elderly bearded gentleman in the rostrum could well be the patriarch, Edward Laughton. 'The Meat Game: A History of the Gepps Cross Abattoirs and Livestock Markets' by Richard Maurovic (Adelaide, 2007) contains interesting details of the Laughtons and their pioneering role as auctioneers at the new Gepps Cross abattoirs in 1913 (see pages 43-45). This publicity photograph may well have been taken there and then.
