A table fork with 'AAE' and the penguin logo engraved on the handle

The silver-plated Mappin & Webb fork (A1-design, 182 mm) is a little tarnished and shows minor signs of use, but considering its history, this rare artefact is in excellent condition.

The 1930 edition of 'The Home of the Blizzard' was marketed as the 'abridged popular edition' of the two-volume 1915 classic. However, Mawson's new preface to it points out that 'the illustrations in this volume, though few in number compared with those in the larger work, are many of them new and never before published', and that the text 'necessitated the re-writing of certain sections and the revision of the whole'. These revisions include additional material, not least a much larger appendix of acknowledgements, noting for the first time the contribution of 'Mappin & Webb (cutlery and electro ware)'. The fork turned up at a garage sale in New Zealand a dozen or more years ago; it was almost certainly souvenired from the Winter Quarters during the second BANZARE voyage, which spent several days at Cape Denison in early January 1931.
