Ethnological Studies among the North-West-Central Queensland Aborigines

Brisbane, Edmund Gregory, Government Printer, 1897.

Tall octavo, xvi, 199, [1] (colophon) pages plus a folding genealogical tree and 24 numbered plates (comprising a map and 438 illustrations on 23 pages of plates, including 4 chromolithographed pages, one of which is the ethno-pornographical plate); a strip of paper printed with the note 'This work is intended for scientific purposes only' is tipped in on the front flyleaf.

Original blind-stamped cloth rubbed at the extremities and a little marked, with the spine sunned and a little worn at the ends; short splits to the head of the hinges have old (and adequate) repairs with glue; leading edge slightly ink-marked; inner hinges cracked but firm; all plates and the inner surfaces of the flyleaves are a little foxed and the map has an inkspot in the bottom margin; about ten cross-references to articles in 'Oceania' are inked in the margins; overall a decent copy with an early ownership signature in pencil at the head of the title page.

Chapter XIII, 'Ethno-Pornography' (pages 167-184), is prefaced by an Author's Note: 'The following chapter is not suitable for perusal by the general lay reader'. We also add that it is not for the faint-hearted either.
