New York, Bollingen Foundation (and distributed by Pantheon Books), 1964 (first thus)/ 1837 (also first thus).

Octavo, four volumes, xxvi, 345; xvi, 547; xvi, 540; and vi, 112 (last blank), [vi], 310 (facsimile) pages plus a frontispiece portrait in the first volume.

Cloth very lightly sunned on the spines, with minimal light foxing to some joints; endpapers lightly offset; an excellent set (internally fine) with the unclipped ('$18.50 / 4 vols.') cream-coloured dustwrappers with black and red lettering on the spines and front panels: the first one is lightly marked and indented on the spine, and lightly creased along the rear bottom edge; the second one is lightly marked on the spine and front panel; the fourth one is lightly bumped at the head of the front joint, with a tiny light mark to the front panel. The books are still housed in the original slipcase with the large two-colour title-label on one side (the slipcase is unevenly sunned on the blank top panel, with the base a little bumped and with one of its joints neatly reinforced).

Bollingen Series LXXII ('The seventy-second in a series of books sponsored by Bollingen Foundation'). The first literal translation of 'Eugene Onegin'; the text is taken from the 1837 edition, the last to appear in Pushkin's lifetime. Volume 1 contains Nabokov's lengthy introduction and his translation; Volumes 2 and 3 contain his commentary; Volume 4 comprises the index and a reduced facsimile reproduction of the 1837 edition. 'In the commentary, Nabokov gives translations of lines and stanzas deleted by the censor or by Pushkin himself, as well as variant passages from Pushkin's notebooks, fragments of a continuation called "Onegin's Journey", the unfinished and unpublished "Chapter Ten", and other continuations. The present work also contains an extensive introduction, two appendixes ... and an index'. [4 items].
