Report of the Commissioners of Railways, 1848. [Together with] Report ... 1848, Part 2. [Together with] Report ... 1849

London, HMSO, 1848; 1849; and 1850.

Foolscap folio, three reports bound in one volume, 224; xii (last blank), 220 (last colophon); 14 (last blank), 306 (last colophon) pages, plus 5 plates (2 folding) in the last one.

Contemporary flush-cut quarter roan and marbled papered boards; leather faded, worn at the hinges and extremities, and split vertically left of centre (but the boards and stitching are still firm); edges a little marked; a very good copy (internally in fine condition), with a contemporary manuscript index in ink on the front flyleaf.

The first two annual reports by the Commissioners of Railways, who had assumed the responsibilities of the Railway Department of the Board of Trade. The reports on accidents (including evidence from Brunel) run to over 130 pages, and are worth the price on their own. However, for good parochial measure, Part 2 of the 1848 report contains Appendix 61: Reports relating to Colonial Railways (Railways in South Australia) (pages 198-201), and the 1849 report contains Appendix 78: Railways in Australia (pages 234-276, all on NSW). With worthy provenance: 'Council Chamber SA' is written in ink at the head of the first title page.
