Native Laws of the Ellice Islands (British Protectorate). 1894 [cover title]

Suva, Edward John March, Government Printer, 1894.

Large octavo, 11 pages.

Title-wrappers lightly marked; small light tidemark to the bottom margin throughout, but overall an excellent copy.

Offered with a copy of the same title printed in Gilbertese: 'Tulafono o le Atu Elisa (Faamamaluiga e Peretania)'. Publication details, format and pagination are the same as above; the rear cover is a little creased and foxed, and the spine is starting to split at the ends, but overall it is in excellent condition. The Ellice Islands became a British Protectorate in 1892. Mounted on the blank outside rear wrapper of both pamphlets is the bookplate of the British civil servant and anthropologist Dr Henry Evans Maude (1906-2006), for many years an administrator on various Pacific islands, including the Gilbert and Ellice Islands. Embossed in one leaf in each pamphlet is the blindstamp of Adelaide University, which disposed of these items as duplicates. [2 items].
