| TROTT, George Henry Stephens [1866-1917: Victoria and Australia]: An albumen paper cabinet photograph (image size approximately 150x100mm) laid down on the blind-stamped card of H. Parker Rolfe of Philadelphia; it dates from the short visit to America made on the homeward journey of the 1896 Australian touring team to England. It is a posed outdoor shot of the batsman at the crease; it is inscribed ('Yours truly') and signed in ink along the pad. The surface of the image is a little scuffed and the mount is unevenly sunned along the bottom margin; overall it is in excellent condition. Trott was captain on this tour, his last of four to England; he played a total of 24 Tests. 'Trott was invaluable in a crisis, as befits the captain, and the success of the side was to a large extent due to his leadership both on and off the field' (Wynne-Thomas, 1989). $1600 |
