'At the initiation rituals it was the duty of Kulpitjata not only to lead in the chanting of this "line of songs", as the aborigines called them, but to ensure that they were sung in their correct order .... It was such a formidable task to memorize that multitude of songs that Kulpitjata, in the privacy of the bush, had to practise those songs for days so that, when he took his place in the initiation circle, he would neither disgrace himself nor incur the wrath of the old men' (AAP, page 32).
